Sabbath Fantasy I op. 40a Score and Parts
Sabbath Fantasy I op. 40a Score and Parts
My Sabbath Fantasy weaves together six Shabbat melodies that draw on both Sephardic and Ashkenazi traditions. Because the piece explores the relationships between these melodies, it is less a medley of tunes, but more, as one of my students put it, a 'melt-ly,' fusing the tunes into a single cohesive piece that cycles through a gamut of emotions from mystery to beauty to joy, and back to mystery. Duration 9 and a half minutes.
Sabbath Fantasy I is written for intermediate level youth orchestra. The wind parts may be single, except for clarinets, bassoons, and horns (two required of each). The solos in Sabbath Fantasy I are for violin, oboe, flute, clarinet, and trumpet. The five soloists should either stand in front of the orchestra, or be seated in front of the string sections near the conductor..
