THE STORY BEHIND BEACH PEBBLES

Beach Pebbles is a large collection of short piano pieces in three volumes that take a journey back to feelings we first had for beauty and wonder in our world. Rather than the German fairy tales of Robert Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood, Beach Pebbles evokes the sandpipers and sand castles of… Malibu. It begins in a prelude of Sea and Foam, the water all chromatic, murky, and muddled. It eventually clears, we find ourselves back in psychological time to the feelings of summer dreams and the beach—bodysurfing, harbor seals, clouds, etc. The pieces in volume 3 are more extended and challenging, but still romantic, nostalgic, and unabashedly tonal.
