Aquamarine from Water Rays
The visual rhythms of sunlight on water inspired Water Rays, my impressionistic piano piece. By holding the pedal down on the piano, upper resonances and overtones create a shimmer analogous to the beauty and complex intermingling of those waves of light. This excerpt is from the first section, titled Aquamarine. It begins almost like minimal music, sparsely so that the ear can focus as much on the resonance of the notes as the notes themselves. But gradually a complete harmonic world emerges, one that clearly references Debussy and Ravel and their own “water music,” but invites the ear to continue changing focus from the played notes to the upper resonances.
The video is from a gorgeous infinity pool in Tuscany overlooking the Mediterranean, situated on the most picturesque organic farm you might imagine, a real place called Le Tassinaie.
